The proficient parasite
Viscum album, the European mistletoe, is an obligate hemiparasite. This means it must live on a host tree, but it also performs its own photosynthesis. It appears as a spherical evergreen bush, often over a meter in diameter, attached to the branches of deciduous trees. In regions like Hesse, it commonly infests apple, poplar, lime, and willow trees.
The plant's parasitic life begins when a seed is deposited on a suitable branch. Upon germination, it develops a specialized structure called a haustorium, which penetrates the host's bark. This invasive organ fuses with the host's xylem, the tissue responsible for water transport, allowing the mistletoe to siphon off water and mineral nutrients. While it generates its own sugars via photosynthesis in its leathery, yellowish-green leaves, it outsources its hydration and nutrition to the host. This parasitic load can weaken the host tree, reduce its growth, and in severe infestations, contribute to its death. Viscum album is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female, requiring cross-pollination by insects to produce the familiar white berries.
An alliance of bird and berry
The survival and spread of Viscum album depend entirely on birds. This relationship is an example of ornithochory, or seed dispersal by avian vectors. The plant produces white berries filled with a sticky, glutinous pulp called viscin. This substance helps the plant's strategy.
Several bird species consume the berries, but the Mistle Thrush (Turdus viscivorus) is so named for its preference for them. The Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla) is also a highly effective disperser. The birds employ two methods that benefit the mistletoe. First, when a bird like the Mistle Thrush eats the berries whole, the seeds pass through its digestive tract, which removes the outer fruit layer but leaves the sticky viscin-coated seed intact. The bird then excretes the seed in its droppings, often while perched on another tree branch. Alternatively, a bird like the Blackcap might eat only the pulp and then wipe the sticky seed from its beak onto a branch. The viscin acts as a powerful adhesive, gluing the seed firmly to the new host's bark in a perfect position to germinate.
A history of toxins and tradition
Viscum album is poisonous. It contains two primary groups of toxic proteins: viscotoxins and mistletoe lectins. These compounds are cytotoxic, meaning they can kill cells. Viscotoxins are small proteins that primarily damage cell membranes, while lectins are larger proteins that can inhibit protein synthesis by inactivating ribosomes. These toxins serve as a defense mechanism for the plant, yet certain birds can consume the berries without harm.
This toxicity did not deter ancient cultures. The Roman author Pliny the Elder wrote that Celtic Druids held mistletoe growing on oak trees as particularly sacred. They would harvest it with a golden sickle on the sixth day of the moon, sacrificing two white bulls in a ritual. They believed it was an antidote to all poisons and could grant fertility. This reverence for the plant eventually evolved into the Christmas tradition of kissing under a sprig of mistletoe, a custom that became popular in the 18th century. In modern times, extracts from Viscum album, such as Iscador and Helixor, are among the most widely used complementary cancer therapies in Europe, studied for their potential to kill cancer cells and stimulate the immune system.
