The Potato's Second Genesis
While the potato was first domesticated thousands of years ago near Lake Titicaca in the Andes, the Chiloé Archipelago is the genetic origin point for over 90% of the potatoes grown globally today. This is because the world's most common potato subspecies, Solanum tuberosum ssp. tuberosum, is indigenous to this specific island environment. Unlike their Andean ancestors (S. tuberosum ssp. andigena), which were adapted to short daylight hours, the Chilote potatoes evolved to form tubers during the long summer days found at higher latitudes. This adaptation made them perfectly suited for agriculture in Europe and North America.
After the European potato failure in the 1840s, caused by a blight that devastated genetically uniform crops, strains from Chiloé were introduced and quickly replaced the older Andean-derived varieties. The island’s isolation and the dedicated farming practices of its inhabitants created a secondary center of genetic diversification for the tuber. Historically, local farmers cultivated between 800 and 1,000 distinct potato varieties. Today, conservation efforts have registered 286 of these unique landraces, safeguarding a genetic library that is essential for global food security.
Living Libraries of Diversity
The guardians of this potato diversity are the local farmers and Indigenous Huilliche communities of Chiloé. For centuries, they have maintained hundreds of native potato varieties, known locally as papas chilotas, in small family plots. This work, traditionally carried out by women, involves saving seeds and passing down knowledge through generations. This continuous cultivation in home gardens has preserved an array of potatoes with different shapes, sizes, and colors—from deep purple and blue to pink and yellow.
Each variety has a local name and specific use. Names like Michuñe Negra (black michuñe), Clavela Lisa (a creamy pink type), Papa Bruja (witch potato), and Cabra (goat potato) display their unique appearances and cultural stories. This genetic wealth faces threats from the introduction of commercial monocultures. Organizations like the Centro de Educación y Tecnología (CET) in Chiloé work with local farmers to conserve this heritage. Farmers like Yolanda Millapichún, a designated "seed guardian," personally cultivate over 100 native varieties repatriated from university germplasm banks, ensuring their survival.
