An architecture of seismic survival
The Palafito stilt houses of Chiloé exist in one of the most seismically active regions on Earth. The coast of Chile is a major subduction zone, where the Nazca Plate dives beneath the South American Plate, causing frequent, powerful earthquakes. In 1960, the area endured the Valdivia earthquake, the strongest ever recorded at a magnitude of 9.4-9.6. While modern concrete buildings in the city of Valdivia were destroyed, many traditional wooden structures, including the palafitos, survived. Their resilience is not an accident but a direct result of their materials and structural design, which pre-dates modern earthquake engineering.
The core of a palafito's strength is its flexibility. The entire structure is built to move. The foundation consists of thick piles of dense, water-resistant native wood, such as Luma or Guaitecas Cypress (Pilgerodendron uviferum), driven deep into the tidal flats. These piles are not rigidly connected to the house. Instead, the structure rests upon them, allowing the ground to shake violently during a tremor while the house sways and absorbs the energy. This principle is a form of base isolation, a sophisticated technique now used in modern earthquake-resistant buildings. The frame of the house is made from other local woods, with traditional joinery that uses interlocking wood pieces and wooden pegs instead of rigid metal fasteners. This method, borrowed from Chilote boat-building techniques, allows the joints to move and flex under stress without breaking. This combination of a flexible foundation and adaptable joints allows the entire building to dissipate seismic energy that would otherwise cause a rigid structure to fracture and collapse.
A living, evolving tradition
The palafitos of Castro, concentrated in the Gamboa and Pedro Montt neighborhoods, are a cultural and architectural fusion. The practice of building over water has roots in the indigenous Chono and Huilliche peoples, but the current form of the houses emerged during a commercial expansion in the 19th century. Fishermen and merchants built their homes and warehouses over the tidal zone for direct access to the sea, important to the local economy. This also allowed them to build on public land at low cost.
The primary construction materials are sourced from the island's forests. The structural piles and beams use dense, rot-resistant woods. The exterior shingles (tejuelas) are often made from the Alerce tree (Fitzroya cupressoides), a slow-growing conifer known for its extreme durability against moisture. The construction itself is a vernacular tradition, passed down through generations of local carpenters. While these houses were engineered by tradition to survive earthquakes, they face other constant threats. The damp marine environment encourages wood rot, and marine organisms can bore into the wooden piles. Today, many palafitos are no longer fishermen's homes; they have been adapted as hotels, cafes, and artisan shops, bringing new economic life to these historic structures.
