The Miniature Ruminant of Chiloé
In the dense undergrowth of the Valdivian temperate rainforests on Chiloé Island lives the world's second-smallest deer, the Southern Pudú (Pudu puda). This exceptionally small cervid stands just 35 to 45 cm at the shoulder and weighs between 6.5 and 13.5 kg, making many adults lighter than a common house cat. Its stocky body, short legs, and reddish-brown coat are perfectly suited for navigating the thickets and bamboo stands it lives in.
The Southern Pudú is a solitary and primarily crepuscular animal, most active during the late afternoon, evening, and morning. It carves out a network of trails through the dense vegetation to connect its preferred feeding and resting spots. Unlike larger deer species, the male pudú's antlers are simple, backward-pointing spikes that grow to a maximum length of 10 cm and are shed annually. This streamlined headgear prevents them from snagging on branches as the deer moves swiftly through the forest.
An Island Laboratory for Evolution
The diminutive size of the pudú results from insular dwarfism, an evolutionary process where large animal species become smaller over many generations when confined to an island. With limited food resources and fewer large predators, smaller body sizes become an advantage. Chiloé Island provided the perfect isolated environment for this to occur. The pudús on Chiloé Island are slightly larger than their mainland counterparts, a rare exception to the typical island rule that is still being studied.
The pudú's miniaturization has pushed it to the physiological limits for a ruminant—an animal with a four-chambered stomach that digests food by fermenting it. This digestive strategy requires a certain body mass to be effective. The pudú survives by being a highly selective browser, feeding on a diet of high-quality foods such as young leaves, shoots, ferns, fruit, and flowers. This allows it to get the necessary nutrients despite its small stomach capacity. Its existence demonstrates the link between evolutionary pressure and physiological constraints. The species is currently classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN due to habitat loss, poaching, and predation by domestic dogs.
