How a williwaw forms
A williwaw is a sudden, violent squall of cold, dense air that descends from a mountainous coast to the sea. It is a type of katabatic wind, a term from the Greek katabatikos, meaning "going downhill." The process begins on the high, icy peaks of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. Here, the air cools, becomes denser, and is pulled downward by gravity. This mass of cold air then plummets through the steep, narrow fjords that carve through the southern Andes.
As the air is funneled through these constricted valleys, it accelerates dramatically. Wind speeds can leap from near-calm to over 100 knots (185 km/h) in just a few minutes, with some gusts reportedly exceeding 200 km/h. Sailors nicknamed these events "white squalls" because the ferocious wind rips the surface of the water into a thick, white spray, often under clear skies with no storm clouds to give warning. The phenomenon is particularly dangerous in the narrow channels north of Cape Horn, where a sudden gust gives a vessel no room to maneuver away from the rocky shores.
A unique geographical hazard
The geography of Cape Horn creates the perfect conditions for these extreme winds. The southern tip of the Andes mountain range plunges directly into the Drake Passage, one of the most turbulent bodies of water on the planet. This forces the massive eastward-flowing Antarctic Circumpolar Current to squeeze through a narrow gap between South America and Antarctica, creating chaotic seas.
The williwaws descend from the glaciated peaks directly into this already volatile maritime environment. Unlike the vast, open ice sheets of Antarctica where katabatic winds also form, the complex terrain of Tierra del Fuego—with its sharp peaks and deep valleys—concentrates the airflow into unpredictable, high-velocity jets. This combination of extreme winds and turbulent seas has made Cape Horn a maritime graveyard for centuries. It is estimated that over 800 ships have been lost in these waters, with the loss of more than 10,000 lives. Even modern, well-equipped vessels are not immune; in 2001, two cruise ships, the MV Bremen and the Caledonian Star, were crippled by massive waves in the same week.
The term "williwaw" itself is of uncertain origin, first recorded by British sailors in the region in the mid-19th century. Captain Robert FitzRoy, commander of HMS Beagle during Charles Darwin's famous voyage, noted them in 1829, writing, "The williwaws... gave us some trouble, occasionally laying us almost on our beam ends."
