The Carnivorous Landscape
In Cania Gorge National Park, the towering sandstone cliffs define the area—they provide a unique habitat for a predatory plant. These vertical surfaces carved over 200 million years from Precipice Sandstone, host carnivorous sundews of the genus Drosera. These plants thrive in the nutrient-poor, moist environment created by water seeping down the rock faces. Instead of soil, they anchor themselves directly to the porous stone, positioning themselves to capture a meal on the wing.
The hunting mechanism is passive and effective. The plant's leaves are covered in tentacles, technically called glandular trichomes, each tipped with a glistening droplet of sticky mucilage. This dew-like substance attracts insects, which become hopelessly stuck upon landing. As the insect struggles, it triggers more nearby tentacles to slowly curl inwards, securing the prey. This adaptation allows the sundew to colonize an extreme environment where few other plants can survive, turning the sheer gorge walls into a vertical carnivorous garden.
A Chemical Feast
Once a sundew has trapped an insect, its leaf surface transforms into an external stomach. The glands that produce the sticky mucilage also secrete a suite of powerful digestive enzymes. This digestive fluid contains proteases, which break down the soft tissues of the prey, and chitinases that dissolve the hard exoskeleton. The entire process of digestion and absorption can take several days.
The plant absorbs the resulting nutrient-rich liquid—full of nitrogen and phosphorus—directly through its leaves. This process is a direct evolutionary response to the nutrient-deficient sandstone substrate. By capturing and dissolving insects, the Drosera obtains the essential elements for growth that are absent from its rocky home. The plant effectively outsources its nutrient gathering, letting its prey do the hard work of concentrating nitrogen from the environment. Once digestion is complete, the leaf unfurls, leaving the empty husk of the insect behind.
