A scientifically explained haunting
Bhangarh Fort, a 17th-century fortress in Rajasthan's Alwar district, is known as India's most haunted location. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officially prohibits entry to the site between sunset and sunrise. While local legends speak of curses and spectral residents, a compelling scientific theory points to a physical phenomenon: infrasound. The fort's ruined architecture, with its crumbling walls and open corridors, may act as a massive acoustic instrument. Wind moving through the ruins generates low-frequency sound waves, below the 20 Hertz (Hz) threshold of normal human hearing. Though inaudible, these vibrations can have deep physiological and psychological effects on visitors, explaining the unsettling sensations reported within the fort's walls.
The fort was constructed in the 16th century under the rule of Raja Bhagwant Das for his son, Madho Singh. The town included with temples, marketplaces, and palaces. However, the settlement was abandoned, an event that fueled centuries of folklore. One popular legend tells of an ascetic, Bala Nath, who permitted the fort's construction on the condition that its shadow never touched his dwelling. When a later expansion cast a shadow on his home, he cursed the town to ruin. Another story involves a practitioner of black magic who, after being foiled by a princess, cursed the city and all its inhabitants to death without rebirth.
The physics of fear
Infrasound is defined as sound with a frequency below 20 Hz. While humans cannot consciously hear these low-frequency waves, the body can still detect them. Exposure to specific infrasound frequencies can induce feelings of anxiety, nausea, dizziness, and unease. These symptoms match the experiences commonly described as paranormal encounters. The mechanism involves the subtle vibration of internal organs and fluids within the inner ear, which can disrupt balance and create a feeling of pressure.
Evidence for this phenomenon comes from the work of British engineer Vic Tandy in the 1980s. While working in a lab reputed to be haunted, Tandy experienced feelings of dread, cold sweats, and even saw a grey apparition. He later discovered that a newly installed fan was generating a standing sound wave at a frequency of approximately 19 Hz. This frequency is close to the resonant frequency of the human eyeball, and Tandy concluded that the "ghost" was an optical illusion caused by the infrasound vibrating his eyes. Similarly, the specific dimensions and materials of Bhangarh's ruins could create resonant cavities that amplify wind-generated infrasound to levels capable of affecting human perception and physiology, creating a naturally "haunted" environment.
