A Volcano That Never Erupted
Bektau-Ata is an exposed granite pluton, the solidified heart of a volcano that never erupted. During the late Paleozoic Era, at the boundary of the Carboniferous and Permian periods (roughly 300 million years ago), magma pushed upward from the Earth's mantle. This molten rock intruded into the crust but never breached the surface, instead forming a colossal granite plug that cooled in place. This event was part of the formation of the vast Balkhash-Ili volcanic belt that stretches across the region.
The granite itself is not uniform. Its creation involved at least two distinct cooling phases. The initial magma cooled slowly deep within the crust, allowing for the growth of large, well-formed crystals. Later stages involved faster cooling, which resulted in zones of finer-grained granite. This variation in crystal size and structure is fundamental to the area seen today. Over millions of years, tectonic uplift and erosion stripped away the softer overlying rock, exposing the hard, crystalline granite massif to the elements. The highest peak of this exposed pluton now reaches an elevation of 1,213 meters (3,980 feet) above sea level. The entire massif covers an area of approximately 4,000 hectares.
Sculpted by Wind and Water
The bizarre, mushroom-shaped rock formations that define Bektau-Ata are products of differential weathering. This process occurs because the zones of fine-grained and coarse-grained granite erode at different rates. The finer-grained rock is more resistant to weathering and forms the durable "caps" of the mushroom shapes. The coarser, softer granite beneath is more susceptible to erosion by wind and water, and it wears away more quickly to form the narrow "stems".
This slow, relentless sculpting by the elements has created a landscape filled with formations given descriptive names like "Mushroom," "Chest," and "Turtle". Water helps collect in natural depressions and hollows after rainfall to form temporary pools. As this water freezes and thaws, it expands in cracks, breaking the rock apart. Wind then carries abrasive sand particles that further scour the softer rock away. The pinkish granite is also subject to exfoliation, a process where outer layers peel off like an onion, contributing to the rounded, smooth shapes of the larger domes. The result is a unique microclimate and landscape that is different from the surrounding flat, arid steppe.
