A study in contrasts
Lake Balkhash, in southeastern Kazakhstan, is a hydrological anomaly. This vast, sickle-shaped body of water, stretching over 600 kilometers in length, is two lakes in one. A geographical feature—the Saryesik Peninsula—juts into its center, pinching the lake into two distinct basins connected by the narrow Uzynaral Strait. This strait, only 3.5 kilometers wide and about 6 meters deep, is a bottleneck, creating a chemical divide.
The western basin is almost entirely freshwater, fed by the powerful Ili River, which accounts for 70-80% of the lake's total inflow. This water has a salinity below 1.5 grams per liter (g/L), making it suitable for industrial and agricultural use. It is also murky, with suspended sediments giving it a yellow-gray tint and limiting visibility to about one meter. The eastern basin is an endorheic, or terminal, system. With no outlet and fed only by smaller rivers, high evaporation rates in the arid climate concentrate dissolved salts. Here, the salinity can be up to eight times higher than in the west, reaching levels of 3.5 to 7 g/L, and the water is a clear, emerald-blue with visibility exceeding five meters.
A fragile and shifting balance
The divide between fresh and saline water is not static. The immense inflow from the Ili River, originating from snowmelt in China's Tian Shan mountains, creates a constant current pushing freshwater eastward through the Uzynaral Strait. This dynamic prevents the eastern salt water from intruding into the western basin. The boundary's location shifts seasonally depending on the river's volume.
This unique hydrochemistry supports distinct ecosystems. The freshwater west hosts native fish like the Balkhash perch (Perca schrenkii) and Balkhash marinka (Schizothorax argentatus). The more saline east supports different organisms adapted to its brackish conditions. The entire lake system, particularly the Ili River delta, is an important wetland that supports over 120 bird species, including endangered pelicans.
This delicate equilibrium faces significant threats. Water diversion from the Ili River, primarily for agriculture and industry in both China and Kazakhstan, has reduced inflow. The construction of the Kapchagay Dam on the Ili in 1970 caused the lake's level to drop by 2.2 meters between 1970 and 1987. This reduction in freshwater input allows salinity to creep westward, endangering the entire ecosystem in a scenario like the Aral Sea disaster. Industrial pollution from mining operations near the city of Balkhash also deposits heavy metals like copper, zinc, and lead into the lake.
