The original apple
In the Tian Shan mountains of Kazakhstan grows the ancestor of every apple you have ever eaten. These are the wild forests of Malus sieversii, the primary progenitor of the modern domestic apple, Malus domestica. Full genome sequencing confirms that this specific population is the source of the more than 7,500 apple varieties known today. Research published in Nature Communications traced the apple's lineage, showing that about 46% of the domestic apple's genome derives directly from these Kazakhstani trees.
The genetic diversity here is high, far exceeding that of cultivated apples, which are susceptible to diseases like apple scab and fire blight. The Malus sieversii population contains many traits, including natural resistance to these and other pathogens. Scientists are studying these wild genes to protect modern apple crops. The apples themselves show variation, with a single tree capable of producing fruit of different sizes, shapes, and colors, from golden yellow to deep red. The flavors range from sour to honey-sweet, depending on how local bees pollinate the blossoms.
Apples on the move
The story of the apple's global history is linked to the history of the Silk Road. For thousands of years, traders, travelers, and their horses moved through these mountain passes, consuming the wild apples and discarding the cores along the way. This process spread the apple seeds westward. As the trees grew in new lands, they began to cross-pollinate with local European crabapple species, such as Malus sylvestris.
This hybridization created new varieties with novel traits. Studies show that the European crabapple contributed about 21% to the modern apple's genome, lending qualities like firmness and different flavors. Humans selected the trees with the largest and tastiest fruits, fixing these traits through grafting—a technique known to the ancient Romans. Before humans, however, the seeds were dispersed by large mammals like bears, who remain important distributors of the wild apple seeds today. The forests were once much more extensive; up to 80% were destroyed during Soviet development programs for timber and agriculture.
