A High-Altitude Aquarium
In the Southern Altai mountains of East Kazakhstan, at an elevation of 1,447 meters, sits Lake Markakol. The lake occupies a basin formed by tectonic uplift and glaciation during the Quaternary period. It spans a surface area of 455 square kilometers, is 38 kilometers long, and reaches a maximum depth of about 27 meters. The lake's water is exceptionally clear and fed by over 100 small rivers and streams. It has only a single outlet: the Kalzhyr River. The climate is sharply continental, and winter temperatures in the basin can fall to a staggering -55°C, causing an ice sheet up to a meter thick to form on the lake.
The lake and its surroundings form the Markakol Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO in 2022. This protected area contains a wide array of ecosystems, from taiga forests to alpine meadows, and hosts 69 mammal species, including the snow leopard. The lake itself contains at least 12 species of fish. Its isolation has made it a place for unique aquatic life.
The Isolated Inhabitant
Living on the bottom of this remote lake is a distinct, endemic sculpin of the genus Cottus. Like other sculpins, it is a small, bottom-dwelling fish with a large head, pectoral fins, and mottled, camouflaged skin that often lacks scales. These fish are adapted to cold, clear waters and are typically nocturnal, feeding on benthic invertebrates like insect larvae and small crustaceans.
The Markakol sculpin owes its existence to long-term isolation. The lake's formation, estimated to be around two million years ago, cut it off from other river systems. Waterfalls along the Kalzhyr River, the lake's only outflow, create a natural barrier that prevents fish from the greater Irtysh River basin from migrating upstream into the lake. This geographic separation has prevented genetic mixing for millennia, allowing the sculpin and other species—like the endemic Markakol lenok and grayling—to evolve on a separate trajectory. The sculpin is a result of the lake's unique geological history.
