Almost everything you think you know about the dodo is wrong. A 2005 excavation of a Mauritian swamp revealed over 200 dodo bones showing the birds had strong legs, large brains with well-developed smell centers, and survived repeated droughts and cyclones for millions of years. It was not human hunting that killed them but the rats and pigs we brought along, which devoured their single ground-laid egg.
