The intelligent bird behind the myth
The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) is extinction: a slow and foolish bird that practically stumbled into oblivion. This image, cemented by inaccurate 17th-century illustrations, is almost entirely wrong. Modern analysis of the dodo's anatomy, particularly based on skeletons recovered from the Mare aux Songes swamp, reveals a more athletic and agile bird than the one depicted in historical drawings.
High-resolution CT scans of a preserved dodo skull have allowed scientists to reconstruct its brain. The findings show that the dodo's brain was average for its body size, comparable to that of a modern pigeon—an animal known for its trainability and intelligence. This evidence suggests the dodo was not exceptionally dim-witted. The brain scans also revealed a feature highly unusual for birds: large and well-developed olfactory bulbs. This indicates the dodo had a powerful sense of smell, likely used to locate fallen fruit and other food on the forest floor, a departure from the sight-based foraging of most birds.
The dodo evolved on Mauritius in an ecosystem free from terrestrial predators. This long-term security led to its flightlessness and its reported lack of fear towards the first Dutch sailors who arrived in 1598. This tameness was misinterpreted as stupidity, but it was simply an adaptive trait for a once-safe environment.
An ecosystem unravelled
The dodo's extinction, which occurred less than a century after its first recorded mention, was not overhunting. While sailors did hunt the birds, the primary cause was the catastrophic ecological disruption brought by their ships. Invasive species, particularly rats, pigs, and macaque monkeys, swarmed the island. These new arrivals preyed upon the dodos' ground nests, which contained only a single egg, making the species extremely vulnerable.
The 2005 excavations at Mare aux Songes, a freshwater swamp in southeastern Mauritius, uncovered a 4,200-year-old fossil bed containing the remains of hundreds of dodos. This site shows the island's pre-human ecosystem. Analysis of the bones showed that dodos and other native species had survived long periods of severe drought by congregating at this water source. They were resilient survivors adapted to their environment.
The arrival of humans and their associated animals broke this delicate balance. Deforestation for ebony wood and agriculture further destroyed the dodo's habitat. The combination of habitat loss and relentless predation on their eggs by invasive species sealed the dodo's fate. The last confirmed sighting was in 1662.
