An Ancient Presence in Yunnan
On May 1, 1965, geologist Qian Fang found in the Yuanmou Basin of Yunnan Province: two fossilized upper first incisor teeth. These teeth, catalogued as V1519, were later identified as belonging to an early human subspecies, Homo erectus yuanmouensis. They are considered among the earliest hominin fossils found in China and East Asia. The initial discovery prompted further excavations by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, which uncovered stone tools and other evidence of ancient human activity.
The age of the Yuanmou Man fossils has been a subject of scientific debate. The primary dating method used has been paleomagnetism, which studies the Earth's past magnetic field recorded in rock layers. In 1976, initial tests dated the incisors to approximately 1.7 million years ago by linking the sediment layer where they were found to the Gilsa geomagnetic polarity event. Subsequent studies have produced a range of dates, but the 1.7-million-year-old figure remains widely cited. This places Yuanmou Man in the Early Pleistocene epoch, roughly contemporary with early Homo erectus finds in Southeast Asia and only slightly younger than the Dmanisi hominins in the Caucasus.
The two teeth themselves show features characteristic of Homo erectus, including a robust size and a "shovel-shaped" inner surface. The left incisor has a mesiodistal length of 11.4 mm and a buccolingual breadth of 8.1 mm, while the right measures 11.5 mm by 8.6 mm. They are believed to have belonged to a young male individual. In 1984, the discovery of a left tibial shaft 250 meters from the original site added to the fossil record. This shin bone was determined to belong to a young female H. e. yuanmouensis.
Life on a Pleistocene Alluvial Fan
Analysis of fossil pollen and animal remains from the site helps reconstruct the environment of Yuanmou Man. The evidence suggests a mixed habitat of open grassland, bushland, forest, and marshland near a lake or swamp on an alluvial fan. The climate was likely warmer and wetter than it is in the region today. Pollen analysis indicates the presence of pine and alder trees alongside various herbaceous plants.
The site, which sits at an elevation between 1,050 and 1,150 meters, has yielded a collection of animal fossils from the same geological layer as the hominin remains. At least 35 mammal species have been identified, showing a diverse prehistoric ecosystem. These include the deer species Cervocerus ultimus and Rusa yunnanensis, the elephant relative Stegodon, rhinoceroses, cattle, pigs, and the giant short-faced hyena, Pachycrocuta brevirostris licenti.
Alongside the hominin and animal fossils, archaeologists have found simple stone tools. Sixteen tools, including cores, flakes, choppers, and scrapers made from quartz and quartzite, were found in and around the original site. These tools are technologically similar to the Oldowan tools found in Africa from the same period. Evidence of fire use, including charred animal bones and significant charcoal remnants, was also reported, suggesting that Yuanmou Man may have had control over fire.
