The Isotope Detective Story
In the Ailao Mountains of Yunnan, a subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest thrives at elevations over 2,000 meters. This ecosystem presents a puzzle: it remains lush despite a climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Scientists at the Ailaoshan Station for Subtropical Forest Ecosystem Studies, located within the forest at around 2,500 meters, used stable isotope analysis to solve the mystery of the forest's water source.
Water molecules contain different isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen (like deuterium and oxygen-18). The ratios of these heavier isotopes vary depending on the water's origin. Fog, formed from localized evaporation and condensation, has a different isotopic "signature" than rain that may have traveled thousands of kilometers. Researchers collected samples of rain, fog, soil water, and water from within the trees' xylem—the tissue that transports water from roots to leaves. The analysis showed that the water inside the trees was a mix, with a significant portion matching the unique isotopic signature of the local fog, not the rain or deep soil water. This confirmed that the trees were directly absorbing large amounts of water from the near-constant mist that envelops the mountains.
A Self-Watering Ecosystem
The research revealed that as much as 40% of the water used by the canopy trees comes directly from fog. This process, known as foliar uptake, involves trees absorbing moisture through their leaves. The dominant trees, including species like Lithocarpus xylocarpus, are perfectly adapted for this. Their dense canopies are extremely efficient at intercepting wind-driven fog.
This is not a one-way street; the forest actively helps in creating its own weather. Through transpiration, the trees release vast quantities of water vapor into the atmosphere. This moisture rises, cools, and condenses to form the very fog and clouds that then provide water back to the forest. This creates a self-sustaining hydro-ecological loop. The forest essentially recycles its own water, making it more resilient to periods of low rainfall. This mechanism is especially active during the dry season, from winter through spring, allowing the evergreen ecosystem to flourish when other water sources are scarce.
The Ailao Mountain range is one of China's largest and most intact subtropical montane wet evergreen broadleaved forest ecosystems. This unique water cycle helps its preservation and biodiversity, supporting rare species like the western black-crested gibbon and the green peafowl.
