A continuous record in stone
In the tropical rainforests of Sri Lanka, a collection of rock shelters and caves is one of South Asia's most complete records of early human history. Sites like Batadomba-lena and Fa Hien-lena show evidence of occupation by anatomically modern humans from as early as 45,000 to 37,000 years ago. These early inhabitants were hunter-gatherers who adapted successfully to the challenging rainforest environment. The archaeological layers in these caves are deep, preserving a long sequence of stone tools, animal remains, and even human fossils.
The primary raw material for stone tool production was quartz, likely collected as river pebbles from nearby streams. The earliest toolkits include a technology known as microliths—small, shaped stone flakes. These miniaturized tools, some older than 34,000 years, represent some of the earliest evidence for such technology in South Asia. Microliths were not used alone; they were component parts of composite tools. Archaeologists believe they were hafted onto shafts of wood or bone to create projectile weapons like arrows or darts. This technology was essential for hunting the fast-moving, tree-dwelling animals of the rainforest. The stone tool technology at sites like Fa Hien-lena remained remarkably stable for tens of thousands of years, from its appearance around 45,000 years ago until about 4,000 years ago, indicating a successful and persistent adaptation to the tropical environment.
Life in the Late Pleistocene
The animal bones found alongside the stone tools provide a detailed menu of the rainforest diet. The remains show a focus on small mammals, with a particular emphasis on monkeys and giant squirrels. These creatures, along with other forest dwellers like deer, wild boar, and various reptiles, were the main sources of protein. The use of microlith-tipped projectiles would have been an effective strategy for hunting prey in the dense forest canopy.
Excavations have uncovered other signs of a complex culture. Polished bone points, worked from the bones of hunted animals, appear in the earliest occupation layers, representing some of the oldest bone tools in South Asia. These may have been used as awls for working hides or as another type of projectile point. Fragments of ochre, a natural mineral pigment, are also found throughout the cave sequences, suggesting its use for symbolic purposes, such as body paint or art, from the very beginning of the occupation. The inhabitants also created personal ornaments, including beads made from shells, which indicates long-distance contacts, as some shells were brought from the coast.
