Myth, meet Mesolithic
The story of the Ravana Cave is tied to the Hindu epic, the Ramayana. According to the legend, the demon king Ravana captured Princess Sita and hid her within this cave complex near the dramatic 25-meter-tall Ravana Falls. The tale describes a network of secret, man-made tunnels that Ravana used for quick passage through the mountains. While local tradition holds that these passages connect to other significant sites, the archaeological record tells a much older story.
Excavations have uncovered evidence of human occupation that dramatically predates the Ramayana narrative. Archaeological findings confirm that people inhabited this cave as far back as 25,000 years ago, during the Mesolithic period or Middle Stone Age. This places the cave among the important prehistoric sites in Sri Lanka, showing the lives of the island's earliest anatomically modern human inhabitants, sometimes referred to as "Balangoda Man." The cave itself is a natural formation located 1,370 meters above sea level. It measures approximately 15 meters wide, 46 meters long, and 18 meters high. Nothing found in the excavations directly connects the cave to the legendary King Ravana.
A Stone Age diet
The prehistoric inhabitants of Ravana Cave were hunter-gatherers. Their diet, reconstructed from faunal remains found in this and other similar Sri Lankan caves, was diverse. They consumed a wide variety of animals, including monkeys, porcupines, sambar deer, and smaller creatures like squirrels and civet cats. The consistent presence of remains from nonhuman primates, such as macaques and langurs, indicates they were a common food source for prehistoric people in the region.
The diet included reptiles like pythons and monitor lizards, as well as freshwater crabs and mollusks. Evidence from other Mesolithic sites in Sri Lanka, such as Batadomba-lena and Beli-lena, indicates a sophisticated understanding of the local environment. At these sites, archaeologists have found remains of wild breadfruit and bananas, suggesting a diet supplemented with foraged plant materials. The discovery of marine shells at inland sites shows established contact between coastal and interior populations more than 30,000 years ago. The tools used for hunting and processing were geometric microliths—small, sharp stone flakes made from quartz and chert. This tool technology appeared in Sri Lanka as early as 31,000 BP, significantly earlier than its first appearance in Europe.
