Lacquer as a time capsule
The coastal city of Obama, Japan, has been a center for exquisite lacquerware, known as Wakasa-nuri, for over 400 years. This craft, which flourished during the Edo period (1603-1868), is known for its deep, glossy finish and complex designs made by embedding materials like eggshells, seashells, and gold leaf into dozens of layers of lacquer. The lacquer itself, called urushi, is the sap of the Toxicodendron vernicifluum tree. When harvested, this sticky sap is a natural trap, capturing a perfect snapshot of the microscopic environment—pollen grains from nearby plants and trees.
For centuries, it was assumed that craftsmen in Obama harvested their urushi sap locally. The unique preservative qualities of lacquer have turned these decorative objects into scientific records. Palynology, the study of pollen grains and spores, allows scientists to analyze these trapped microfossils. By examining the lacquer layers under a microscope, researchers can identify the specific types of pollen present. This is a "pollen fingerprint" of the exact location where the sap was originally collected, sometimes centuries ago.
Microscopic evidence of ancient trade
Analysis of Wakasa lacquerware from the Edo period revealed a surprising fact: the pollen trapped within the layers did not match the local flora of the Obama region. Instead, the pollen profile was consistent with that of lacquer tree groves in other parts of Japan. This discovery provides direct, microscopic evidence that raw urushi was not a local product. Craftsmen in Obama were part of a sophisticated domestic trade network, importing their primary raw material from distant provinces.
The lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum, is not native to Japan and was introduced from China. Its sap, urushiol, is a potent allergen in its liquid state, related to the irritants in poison ivy. The process of making lacquerware is painstaking; the sap must be cured in a warm, humid environment where the urushiol polymerizes into a durable and waterproof finish. Crafting a single piece of Wakasa-nuri can take months, involving the application of over 100 layers in some cases. The pollen evidence preserved within these layers rewrites the history of this craft, showing that its production was dependent on long-distance trade from its inception.
