An ancient split
Deep within Brazil, a new species of dolphin is slowly emerging. The Araguaian river dolphin, or Inia araguaiaensis, lives in the Araguaia-Tocantins river basin, completely separated from its closest relative, the Amazon river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis). This separation is not recent. Genetic analysis based on mitochondrial DNA indicates their populations split approximately 2.08 million years ago. This timeline corresponds with the geological period when the Araguaia-Tocantins basin became disconnected from the larger Amazon basin.
The natural barrier is a series of powerful rapids and waterfalls in the lower Tocantins River. These impassable stretches of turbulent water created a formidable obstacle, isolating the dolphin populations upstream. Over millions of years, this isolation prevented gene flow between the two groups, setting them on different evolutionary paths. The formal recognition of Inia araguaiaensis as a distinct species came in January 2014, making it the first new river dolphin species to be described since 1918. Morphological studies show the genetic findings, showing the Araguaian boto generally has a wider skull and a different number of teeth per hemimandible (24–28) compared to its Amazonian (25–29) and Bolivian (31–35) relatives.
An accelerated divergence
While the initial split was a natural geological event, modern human activity is now accelerating the speciation process. The Araguaia-Tocantins river system is fragmented by at least six hydroelectric dams, notably the massive Tucuruí Dam, which began operation in 1984. These dams create new, impassable barriers, further subdividing the already isolated Araguaian dolphins into smaller, more fragmented groups.
These smaller populations are more susceptible to the effects of genetic drift, where random changes in gene frequency have a much larger impact than in a bigger population. This forced isolation prevents genetic mixing and magnifies unique mutations within each subgroup. Studies have observed significantly lower dolphin densities downstream of the Tucuruí Dam compared to upstream, suggesting an impact on the population's distribution and health. The total population is estimated to be between 600 and 1,500 individuals, and this limited gene pool is an serious concern for their long-term survival. The Brazilian government has classified the species as endangered.
