In the Zarafshan Valley of Uzbekistan, a hoard of 430 gold coins presented archaeologists with a peculiar mystery. The coins, imitations of gold staters from the reigns of Philip II and Alexander the Great, were old and intentionally damaged. Each coin bore a distinct scratch mark in the exact same location on its surface. This uniformity ruled out accidental damage or simple testing for gold purity. The discovery shows a deliberate act performed on every single piece before they were interred.
The coins were part of a larger find at Tilla Bulak, a site that is a site of human activity for millennia, from the Bronze Age through the medieval period. The name "Tilla Bulak" translates to "source of gold," a fitting name for a place that would eventually yield such a treasure. The hoard itself dates to the late 1st millennium BC, a period when the region was a cultural crossroads inhabited by peoples like the Sogdians and Saka, a group of Scythian tribes. These nomadic and semi-nomadic groups dominated the Eurasian steppes and were known for their elaborate burial practices, which often included many grave goods to accompany the deceased into the afterlife.
The science of ritual killing
The scratches on the Tilla Bulak coins are evidence of a practice known as "ritual killing." The concept, documented across many ancient cultures, involves intentionally breaking, bending, or defacing an object to release its spirit or essence. This act 'kills' the object in the material world, allowing it to transition with its owner to the next. The damage renders the item useless in the secular world, ensuring its status as a permanent gift to the gods or the dead.
Scientific analysis using non-destructive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) confirmed the nature of the damage. XRF technology bombards an object with high-energy X-rays, causing the atoms within to emit secondary, fluorescent X-rays. By measuring the energy of these emissions, scientists can determine the precise elemental composition of the material. In this case, XRF analysis would have confirmed the gold's makeup and, more importantly, provided high-resolution data on the scratches, verifying their consistency and deliberate nature.
This practice of object mutilation is seen in other contexts, such as Iron Age European sanctuaries where swords and shields were found bent and broken. The Scythians themselves had complex funerary rites, often burying chieftains in elaborate log chambers under large mounds called kurgans, surrounded by sacrificed horses and valuable goods. The Tilla Bulak hoard, with its 430 ritually "killed" coins, shows these beliefs in action.
