A highway of scent
In the Nuratau Mountains of Uzbekistan, a critical corridor for the snow leopard (Panthera uncia) shows how these solitary cats navigate a shared landscape. This is not a physical highway, but one defined by smell. Motion-activated cameras positioned along narrow ridgelines and gorges show individual leopards passing the same points. They do so using a method of temporal spacing—essentially, a time-share system. An individual will leave various scent marks, including urine spray, scrapes made with its hind paws, and cheek rubs on rocks. These chemical signals act as messages, conveying the animal's identity, sex, and reproductive status to others who pass through.
Subsequent leopards can detect these olfactory cues for over a month. By sniffing the mark and using their vomeronasal organ—a behavior identified by a characteristic open-mouthed grimace called the flehmen response—they assess when the previous cat passed. This allows them to maintain a safe distance, avoiding direct and potentially violent confrontations over territory. This chemical communication is a system that allows for overlapping home ranges, which can vary from 12 to 39 square kilometers, without constant conflict.
An ark in the mountains
The Nuratau corridor exists within the larger Nuratau-Kyzylkum Biosphere Reserve, an area established in 1975 that stretches 170 km and connects the western spurs of the Pamir-Alai mountains with the Kyzylkum Desert. The reserve protects a unique ecosystem where mountain steppe meets arid desert. Its highest point is Mount Zargar at 2,169 meters. This landscape of sandstone and limestone is important for the leopards, but for their primary prey.
The reserve is the last global stronghold for the Severtzov's wild sheep (Ovis ammon severtzovi), the smallest subspecies of argali. These sheep, with ram horns reaching up to 83 cm in length, are an important food source for the leopards. The reserve supports a range of other species, including numerous birds of prey like the cinereous vulture and saker falcon, and hosts 41 plant species listed in the Red Book of Uzbekistan. Conservation efforts here are legally mandated, with the snow leopard's protection enshrined in the Red Book of Uzbekistan, which classifies the species as Critically Endangered within the country.
