Genetic ghosts in the mountains
In the isolated Nuratau Mountains of Uzbekistan, a small population of Persian leopards (Panthera pardus tulliana) roams. These leopards are so elusive that direct observation is nearly impossible. To understand this population, scientists turned to what the animals leave behind: their scat. By collecting fecal samples, researchers can perform non-invasive genetic sampling, extracting DNA from intestinal cells shed in the feces. This technique shows the lives of animals without ever needing to see or handle them.
The analysis of leopard scat from the Nuratau-Kyzylkum Biosphere Reserve yielded a surprising result. Genetic fingerprinting identified only seven individual leopards in the study area. When scientists constructed a family tree, or pedigree, from the DNA data, they found that all seven individuals descended from just two females. This finding points to a severe population bottleneck in the recent past, where the number of animals crashed, leaving a very small pool of ancestors for the current population. The entire leopard community of this mountain range is, genetically speaking, one very small, extended family.
Surviving the bottleneck
Such an extreme lack of genetic diversity is typically a bad sign for a species' long-term survival. Small, inbred populations are vulnerable to "inbreeding depression," which can lead to lower reproductive rates, higher infant mortality, and susceptibility to disease. Offspring of a parent-offspring or full-sibling mating have an inbreeding coefficient of 0.25; continued inbreeding can raise this value and the associated risks.
Despite the high potential for inbreeding, the Nuratau leopard population appears to be stable. This suggests the population may have undergone a process called "purging," where harmful recessive alleles are eliminated from the gene pool during the bottleneck. While the population has survived this genetic trial, its small size and isolation make it exceptionally vulnerable. The Nuratau mountains act as a habitat island, disconnected from other leopard populations in Central Asia, which prevents the natural introduction of new genes.
Conservation of this unique population depends on protecting its habitat and its prey base. The Persian leopard's diet is varied but often focuses on wild ungulates. In areas where wild prey is scarce, they may come into conflict with humans by preying on livestock. Protecting the leopards of Nuratau means ensuring the health of their entire mountain ecosystem.
