An Island of Evolution
The Nuratau Mountains are a geological exception. Unconnected to the grander Pamir-Alai and Tien Shan mountain systems, this range forms an isolated, 170-kilometer-long island of rock in a sea of desert. This isolation drives of evolution. Over millennia, plant populations here were cut off, allowing them to follow unique genetic paths. The result is a high rate of endemism, with at least 32 plant species found here and nowhere else on Earth.
This area, where the mountains meet the Kyzylkum Desert, is the primary center of origin for the entire Tulipa genus. The mountains' specific geology, composed mainly of sandstone and limestone, and their arid climate create the perfect stress-cooker for speciation. Seven distinct tulip species are registered in the Nurata range alone. Among these are Tulipa korolkowii, a dwarf species with bright red flowers, and the strikingly variable Tulipa lehmanniana, known for its beauty and diverse coloration.
New Flowers, Recently Found
The process of discovery here is ongoing. While Central Asia is the ancestral home of all tulips, new species are still being identified in the 21st century. The mountains of Uzbekistan and its neighbors continue to reveal previously unknown tulips, some distinguished by subtle genetic markers or unique physical traits. For example, Tulipa scharipovii was first described in 2009 from the nearby Kurama range. Another species, Tulipa lemmersii, was formally described after being found on an expedition in 2005 in the neighboring Western Tien-Shan mountains.
These discoveries show the biological value of the region. The Nuratau-Kyzylkum Biosphere Reserve was established to protect these fragile ecosystems, including the unique flora. The reserve covers an area of 17,752 hectares on the northern slopes of the mountains, with elevations ranging from 530 to 2,169 meters. It protects the tulips and ancient stands of walnut and pistachio trees. Many of the local tulips, including Tulipa lehmanniana, are included in the Red Data Book of Uzbekistan due to threats from overgrazing.
