The great disappearance
In the arid foothills of the Nurata Mountains, bordering the vast Kyzylkum Desert, lives an amphibian that spends most of its life in a state of suspended animation. The Turan toad, Bufotes turanensis, has adapted to a habitat of extreme temperatures, which can soar to 43°C in summer and plummet to -32°C in winter. To survive the long, dry months with almost no water, the toad engages in a deep form of dormancy called estivation.
When surface conditions become inhospitable, the Turan toad burrows deep into the soil. Once underground, it enters a state of extreme metabolic depression. Its heart rate, breathing, and all other cellular processes slow to a fraction of their normal activity. Studies on other estivating amphibians have recorded metabolic rate reductions of over 75%, a necessary shutdown to conserve energy and water until the next rain. Encased in the earth, the toad waits, sometimes for the better part of a year, for the one environmental cue that can restart its life cycle.
A life in fast forward
The trigger for the toad's reanimation is the first heavy spring or summer rainstorm. The sudden influx of moisture into the arid soil signals the end of the long wait. In a phenomenon known as explosive breeding, thousands of Turan toads emerge from the ground simultaneously. For a few frantic days or even hours, the area fills with their calls as males compete for mates in the ephemeral ponds and puddles created by the downpour.
This period of activity is intensely focused on reproduction. A single female, related to the European green toad, can lay up to 15,000 eggs in long, black, gelatinous strings. These eggs begin a rapid race against time. The tadpoles must hatch and complete their metamorphosis into toadlets before their temporary aquatic homes evaporate under the Central Asian sun. Once this brief, frenzied period of life closes and the land dries out, the adult toads feed, replenish their reserves, and vanish back into the earth to begin their long, silent wait once more.
