A River's Long Memory
The Tiber River keeps a detailed, 2,500-year-long diary of its own turbulent history, written in layers of mud and silt. Historical records document floods in Rome as far back as 414 BCE, creating one of the longest hydrological records in the world. Scientists practicing paleoflood hydrology use this archive to reconstruct past climate conditions. By drilling sediment cores from the floodplains and even from the ground beneath the Colosseum and Roman Forum, they can analyze the slack-water deposits—fine-grained sediments that settle out of slow-moving floodwaters. Each layer represents a distinct flood event, revealing its magnitude and frequency through time.
This geological evidence is cross-referenced with dendrochronology, the study of tree rings, and meticulous historical accounts. The combined data show that flood frequency has not been constant. The medieval period, in particular, was significantly wetter than today. Major floods, powerful enough to submerge large parts of the city, occurred roughly every 10 years. This contrasts with the modern period, where similar large-scale floods have a recurrence interval of about 30 years. This increased medieval activity is linked to climatic shifts, including a predominantly positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), which altered storm tracks over the Mediterranean.
Catastrophes Carved in Stone
Rome's history is punctuated by catastrophic flood events. The flood of Christmas 1598 was one of the most destructive ever recorded. The waters rose to an unprecedented 19.56 meters, submerging the columns of the Pantheon and causing thousands of deaths. The force of the current destroyed nine mills and tore away three arches of the ancient Pons Aemilius, which has been known ever since as the Ponte Rotto, or "Broken Bridge." The sole surviving 16th-century arch still stands in the middle of the river.
Another devastating flood occurred in December 1870, just months after Rome became the capital of a unified Italy. The water reached 17.22 meters, inundating low-lying areas and prompting the new government to take decisive action. This event spurred the construction of the massive travertine embankment walls, or muraglioni, that now line the river. Begun in 1876, this enormous engineering project forever changed the city's relationship with its river, containing its flow but also separating it from the urban fabric. Today, over 120 stone plaques, or targhe dell'inondazione, are on buildings throughout the city, marking the high-water lines of these historic inundations and serving as records of the river's former power. The oldest surviving marker dates to a flood on November 6, 1277.
