An ancient workshop
About 400,000 years ago, near modern-day Rome, early humans created a specialized workshop in a gully carved by a stream. This location, now known as La Polledrara di Cecanibbio, was a place where straight-tusked elephants (Palaeoloxodon antiquus) came to drink and sometimes died. Over time, their accumulated remains formed one of the largest deposits of this extinct elephant's fossils in Italy. Excavations that began in 1985 have uncovered thousands of bones from animals that got stuck in the marshy stream bed.
The hominins of this period, likely early Neanderthals or their predecessors Homo heidelbergensis, took full advantage of this natural resource. They didn't just scavenge meat; they systematically processed the massive elephant carcasses. The site contains thousands of faunal remains, with a clear prevalence of Palaeoloxodon antiquus and the aurochs, Bos primigenius. The hominins would break the long bones to extract marrow and then, with foresight, they would select specific fragments for a second purpose: making tools.
A standardized toolkit from bone
Analysis of the artifacts from the Castel di Guido site, which is part of the same archaeological area, reveals a bone tool industry of surprising complexity for the Middle Pleistocene. Researchers identified 98 bone tools, the largest number of flaked bone implements made by pre-modern hominids described to date. Unlike other sites from this era where bone use was often opportunistic, the artisans here followed a standardized production method. They systematically fractured elephant long bones to create uniform "blanks," which they then shaped into a variety of well-defined tools.
This toolkit included pointed tools for cutting meat, wedges for splitting heavy femurs, and, most unexpectedly, a tool called a 'lissoir'. A lissoir is a smoother, typically used for working leather. This type of specialized tool was not thought to have become common for another 100,000 years, making its presence at this site significant. The production shows a level of planning and cognitive ability that challenges ideas about the simplicity of early bone tool technology. These ancient people understood their environment and the materials it offered.
