An earthwork enigma
The Great Serpent Mound is the world's largest known prehistoric effigy mound. It measures 411 meters (1,348 feet) long, with its earthen walls ranging from 30 centimeters to over 1.5 meters in height and averaging 6 to 7 meters in width. The structure depicts a massive, uncoiling serpent with seven distinct curves in its body and a triple-coiled tail at its western end. Its eastern end features the serpent's head, which seems to engulf a 37-meter-long hollow oval feature. Interpretations of this oval vary; it may represent an egg, the sun, an eye, or the body of a frog being swallowed.
The mound's precise age and builders are subjects of ongoing archaeological debate. Excavations have revealed no artifacts or burials within the serpent structure itself, suggesting a ceremonial or astronomical function. For many years, researchers attributed the effigy to the Adena culture (800 BCE - 100 CE), based on nearby burial mounds. However, radiocarbon dating performed in the 1990s on charcoal fragments from within the mound yielded a date of circa 1070 CE, pointing to the Fort Ancient culture (1000 - 1650 CE). More recent studies from 2014 dated other organic material to around 300 BCE, reigniting the Adena theory. Some evidence suggests the Fort Ancient people may have rebuilt or modified an earlier Adena structure.
Astronomical alignments are an important feature of the mound. The head of the serpent aligns with the sunset on the summer solstice. The curves in the winding body may also correspond to the winter solstice sunrise and the equinox sunrises. This careful construction indicates a sophisticated knowledge of solar cycles.
A foundation of cosmic impact
The serpent rests on a high plateau overlooking Ohio Brush Creek, but its foundation is different. The entire site is located within the Serpent Mound Disturbance, an eroded meteorite impact crater. This complex impact structure has an estimated diameter of 8 to 14 kilometers (5.0 to 8.7 miles).
The impact occurred between 252 and 330 million years ago, during the Permian or Mississippian period. The cataclysmic event created what geologists call a cryptoexplosion structure, with a central uplifted area and a surrounding ring-shaped trough, or graben. Evidence for the impact is abundant, including shatter cones—fan-shaped patterns in rock formed by high-velocity shockwaves—and intensely faulted and folded bedrock deep below the surface. The impact had enough energy to disturb over 11 cubic kilometers of rock, thrusting the central portion up at least 300 meters.
There is no direct evidence that the mound's builders understood the meteoric origin of the landscape. The unique, disturbed topography created by the ancient impact may have marked the location as a spiritually significant place. The elevated, circular landforms would have been a distinct feature in the region, possibly influencing the decision to build such a monumental earthwork at that specific location.
