An ancient industrial route
The Piller Saddle, or Pillerhöhe, is a mountain pass in the Tyrolean Alps. During the Late Bronze Age, from roughly the 14th to the 11th century BCE, this pass was part of an important trade route. Miners and traders transported copper, a component for making bronze, from resource-rich areas in the Eastern Alps, like the Mitterberg region, southward into what is now Italy. The route bypassed the narrow Inn valley gorge near Landeck, providing a more direct path for this prehistoric commerce. Evidence for this extensive trade comes from archaeological finds, including large deposits, or hoards, of bronze objects. One of the most significant is the Moosbruckschrofen hoard, found near the Piller Saddle, which contained 350 individual bronze items. This collection is considered one of the largest and most diverse Bronze Age finds in Europe. Among the items was a fragment of a crested helmet, one of the oldest of its kind found on the continent. These objects show the passage of raw materials but also the presence of considerable wealth and sophisticated metalworking in the region.
Isotopes as evidence
The scientific proof of this ancient trade network comes from lead isotope analysis. Copper ores from different geological deposits have distinct "fingerprints" based on their ratios of lead isotopes. This isotopic signature remains unchanged during the smelting and casting process. Scientists can analyze the lead isotopes in a finished bronze artifact, like a sword or an axe found in Italy, and compare its signature to a database of known copper ore deposits across Europe. This method has confirmed that copper from mining districts in the Austrian Alps was a primary source for metal objects produced and circulated in Northern Italy during the Bronze Age. The technique provides a direct link, showing that raw copper, likely in the form of plano-convex ingots, was moved over high-altitude passes like the Piller Saddle. The presence of specific ore types, such as chalcopyrite, in the Tyrolean mining regions further refines this connection. The combined archaeological and geochemical data shows a large-scale production and logistics network that existed thousands of years ago.
