A chance discovery
In 1959, a local man from the village of Petralona named Philippos Chatzaridis was searching for a water source on the slopes of Mount Katsika. He discovered a cleft in the rock which, after being widened by villagers, revealed a complex cave system with stalactites and stalagmites. A year later, another villager, Christos Sariannidis, found a nearly complete hominid cranium cemented into the cave wall by calcite deposits, approximately 30 centimeters above the ground. The lower jaw was missing, but the skull was otherwise remarkably preserved, encased in a layer of brown calcite. This fossil became known as the Petralona Skull.
An ancient and controversial hominin
The Petralona cranium displays a mix of features that has made its classification a subject of scientific debate for decades. It has thick cranial walls and a prominent brow ridge, traits associated with Homo erectus. However, its brain capacity is larger, and other features align it with later hominins. Today, many researchers classify the skull as Homo heidelbergensis, a species considered a potential common ancestor of both Neanderthals and modern humans.
The age of the skull is another point of intense debate. The lead excavator of the site, Greek anthropologist Aris Poulianos, dated the stratigraphic layer where the skull was found to be approximately 700,000 years old. Other dating methods, including electron spin resonance and uranium-series dating on the calcite crust, have produced a range of different ages. Some studies suggest an age between 160,000 and 240,000 years, while more recent analyses in 2025 propose a minimum age of about 286,000 years. This ongoing disagreement over age and classification is complicated by disputes between Poulianos's Anthropological Association of Greece and the Greek government, which have at times restricted scientific access to the cave and the fossil.
A prehistoric ecosystem
The Petralona cave was a resting place for one hominin. Excavations have uncovered a rich collection of fossils from more than 30 animal species. The cave was used as a den by predators like cave bears and hyenas. Their prey, including horses, deer, and ibex, were brought into the cave, leaving behind many fossilized bones. The fossil assemblage also includes remains of lions, panthers, rhinos, and elephants.
The cave contains what researchers claim are the oldest traces of controlled fire ever discovered in Greece. Analysis of the cave's layers revealed traces of ash and burned materials, suggesting that its ancient inhabitants knew how to use and manage fire. This evidence shows the behavior and capabilities of the hominins who lived in this region hundreds of thousands of years ago.
