A calendar in stone
Kokino sits on a neo-volcanic hill known as Tatićev Kamen, at an altitude of 1,013 meters. The observatory itself occupies an area of about 5,000 square meters. Its builders, a local Early Bronze Age culture, utilized the natural properties of the andesite rock, which cracks into large, manageable blocks. The site consists of two main platforms separated by a 19-meter difference in elevation. The lower platform is dominated by four large stone seats, or "thrones," carved into the rock and facing east. From a central observation post on the upper platform, ancient astronomers could watch the sunrise over a series of specially made rock markers on the eastern horizon.
These markers are not random. Three principal stone cuttings align precisely with the sunrise on the summer and winter solstices and the spring and autumn equinoxes. This solar calendar would have been indispensable for organizing the agricultural cycle of planting and harvesting. The entire complex was discovered in 2001 by archaeologist Jovica Stankovski of the National Museum in Kumanovo. In 2005, NASA included Kokino on a list of significant ancient observatories, alongside famous sites like Stonehenge and Abu Simbel.
