The Copper Anomaly
In the hills of Paraíba, Brazil, pegmatites formed between 530 and 480 million years ago during the Brasiliano-Pan-African orogeny. These pegmatites, a type of coarse-grained igneous rock, intruded into older quartzites and metaconglomerates of the Neoproterozoic Equador Formation. For decades they were mined for minerals like tantalite and kaolin clay, but their most valuable minerals remained hidden until the 1980s.
The tourmaline found here is a scientific anomaly. While most tourmalines owe their color to elements like iron or manganese, Paraíba tourmalines are colored by copper (Cu), an element not typically found in high concentrations in such geological formations. This specific variety, a cuprian elbaite, contains copper oxide weight percentages ranging from 0.4% in light blue stones to 2.5% in darker specimens. The presence of manganese (Mn) modifies the copper's expression, creating a spectrum from electric blue and turquoise to green and even rare violet hues. The geology of this specific region in northeastern Brazil created the conditions for a hydrous melt rich in boron, lithium, and an unusual amount of copper to crystallize directly into elbaite tourmaline.
The result is a gem with a refractive index of 1.603 to 1.655 and a color saturation so intense it is often described as "neon" or "electric," appearing bright even in low light.
From Persistence to Phenomenon
Prospector Heitor Dimas Barbosa began digging in the Paraíba hills in the early 1980s, convinced that something unique was hidden there. For over five years, he and a small team excavated narrow shafts using hand tools and candlelight. In 1989, their persistence led to the discovery of elbaite tourmaline crystals of an unparalleled, bright blue-green. The discovery at what became known as the Mina da Batalha ignited the gem world. During the 1990 Tucson gem show, prices for the newly named Paraíba tourmaline escalated from a few hundred dollars to over $2,000 per carat in just four days. Today, top-quality Brazilian Paraíba tourmalines can command prices exceeding $30,000 per carat for stones over two carats, making them one of the most expensive gemstones on the market. The original Batalha mine had a limited output, with an estimated 10 to 15 kilograms of gem-quality material recovered between 1989 and 1991.
In the early 2000s, copper-bearing tourmalines were also discovered in Nigeria and Mozambique. After debate, the Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee (LMHC) ruled in 2006 that the name "Paraíba tourmaline" could apply to any copper-bearing elbaite tourmaline, regardless of origin, due to their shared chemical cause of color. However, Brazilian stones, known for smaller sizes but more intense saturation, remain the benchmark for this rare gem.
