The golden-lipped oyster
The deep, warm gold of a Myeik pearl begins with a specific mollusk: the gold-lipped variant of Pinctada maxima. This species is the largest pearl-producing oyster in the world, capable of growing up to 30 centimeters in diameter and living for 40 years. It thrives in the clean, tropical waters of the Myeik Archipelago, typically at depths of 5 to 30 meters where water temperatures stay between 25 and 30°C. These conditions, combined with stable salinity and abundant phytoplankton, are essential for the oyster's health and the quality of the pearl it produces.
The distinctive golden color of the pearl comes from the oyster's biology. The inner shell layer, known as nacre or mother-of-pearl, has a golden band along its outer edge, or "lip." This coloration is then imparted to the pearl itself as the oyster secretes thousands of layers of nacre around an irritant. The process is slow; a single cultured pearl takes between two and four years to form, allowing for an exceptionally thick and lustrous nacre.
The chemistry of color
A pearl’s color and luster are phenomena of chemistry and physics. Nacre is a composite material made primarily of aragonite—a crystalline form of calcium carbonate—bound together by an organic protein called conchiolin. The oyster deposits these materials in countless microscopic, concentric layers.
The golden hue of Myeik pearls is not from a simple pigment. It arises from the specific composition of the conchiolin secreted by the gold-lipped oyster, which can range from orange to reddish-brown. This organic material, combined with trace elements absorbed from the surrounding water, determines the pearl's base color. The deep luster and shimmering overtones are physical effects, created as light refracts and reflects through the stacked, translucent layers of aragonite crystals. South Sea pearls are known for having the thickest nacre of any cultured pearl, often averaging 2 to 4 millimeters. This thickness increases the depth of color and the intensity of the pearl's characteristic soft glow.
Modern pearl cultivation in the Myeik Archipelago began in 1954 as a joint venture with Japanese technicians. Technicians surgically implant a spherical bead, often made from a U.S. freshwater mussel shell, into the oyster's gonad. A small piece of mantle tissue from a donor gold-lipped oyster is inserted with the bead. This piece of mantle dictates the color of the nacre the host oyster will produce. After implantation, the oysters are returned to the sea in nets for at least two years to allow the pearl to grow.
