An engineering marvel of the ancient world
Built around 2500 BCE, the Great Bath of Mohenjo-daro is considered the earliest public water tank in the ancient world. Located on the high "citadel" mound of the city, the structure measures approximately 12 meters (40 feet) long, 7 meters (23 feet) wide, and has a maximum depth of 2.4 meters (8 feet). Two wide staircases descend into the tank from the north and south. The builders' primary challenge was making this massive basin watertight, and their solution shows an advanced understanding of materials science.
The tank's floor and walls were constructed from precisely fitted, kiln-fired bricks laid on edge. These were set in a gypsum plaster mortar. To achieve complete impermeability, the engineers added a thick layer of natural bitumen, a waterproof tar, along the sides and likely beneath the floor of the tank. This technique was so effective that the basic structure remains watertight after more than four millennia. Water was supplied to the bath from a large well located in an adjacent room on the eastern side of the structure. After use, the water was removed through a small outlet in the southwest corner which connected to a large, corbelled drain made of brick.
A city built on water
The Great Bath was not an isolated feat of engineering but the centerpiece of a city with perhaps the most sophisticated urban sanitation system of its time. The Indus Valley Civilization prioritized hygiene, with many of Mohenjo-daro's houses containing private bathrooms and toilets. These facilities were connected to a city-wide network of covered drains that ran along the main streets. Wastewater from upper-story bathrooms was channeled down through enclosed terracotta pipes into the street drains. The city had over 700 wells, ensuring a constant supply of fresh water for its inhabitants.
The precise function of the Great Bath is still a matter of study, but most archaeologists agree it was used for religious or ritual purification rather than recreational swimming. The elaborate construction and its location in the ceremonial citadel district suggest a special significance. The structure was surrounded by a colonnade and a series of rooms, one of which contained the well. Another large building nearby, sometimes called the "College of Priests," may have housed religious officials who used the bath for ceremonies. The combination of advanced hydraulic engineering and organized public structures points to a complex, well-ordered society.
