The Guns of Seneca
For centuries, a mysterious sound has startled people near Seneca Lake. It's a deep, resonant boom, like distant cannon fire, that rolls across the water without any visible cause. Locally known as the "Seneca Guns," the phenomenon was described by author James Fenimore Cooper in his 1850 short story, "The Lake Gun." He called it "a sound resembling the explosion of a heavy piece of artillery, that can be accounted for by none of the known laws of nature." The sounds are part of a global phenomenon known as "mistpouffers" or "brontides," which occur over large bodies of water around the world.
Seneca Lake is the largest and deepest of the Finger Lakes, a chain of long, narrow lakes in central New York. Formed by glaciers, its basin reaches a maximum depth of about 186 meters (618 feet). The lakebed sits on top of Devonian-period shales and sandstones, formations known to contain natural gas. This geological setting is central to the leading scientific explanation for the booms.
Gas, Quakes, or Something Else?
The leading theory points to the explosive release of methane gas. Geologists theorize that natural gas, primarily methane, gets trapped in lakebed sediments under immense pressure. Periodically, this pressure overcomes the weight of the sediment and water above, erupting in a large bubble. When this bubble bursts at the surface, it creates a powerful sound wave that the lake's deep, trough-like shape amplifies. This hypothesis gained support when sonar surveys between 2018 and 2024 discovered more than 140 large craters on the lake floor, believed to be remnants of past gas eruptions.
Another explanation involves minor seismic activity. The Finger Lakes region experiences infrequent, small earthquakes. A magnitude 1.7 microearthquake was recorded under Seneca Lake in 2013. Some scientists propose that these shallow "microquakes" could generate high-frequency vibrations that travel through the bedrock and are perceived as booming sounds. Seismic records do not consistently align with reports of the booms.
Other possibilities have been considered and mostly dismissed for the historical accounts. Sonic booms from military aircraft can create similar sounds, but the Seneca Guns were reported long before the invention of supersonic flight. Exploding meteors, or bolides, are another potential cause, but they are too infrequent to account for all the reported incidents. The evidence from the lake floor strongly suggests that geology and gas dynamics are the primary drivers of this long-standing auditory mystery.
