The Energy of Excrement
In the limestone karst regions of Minas Gerais, Brazil, a complete absence of sunlight forces life to find another source of energy. That source is guano—tons of it—deposited by enormous colonies of bats. These caves are not static geological features but dynamic, living systems powered from the top down. The primary energy producers are not plants, but hundreds of thousands of bats representing numerous species, from fruit-eaters to the haematophagous common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus). Their nutrient-rich excrement supports a food web.
The guano piles themselves are ecosystems. They are colonized by a succession of fungi and bacteria that break down the waste, releasing nutrients. This decay supports a huge biomass of invertebrates. Mites are often the most numerous organisms, alongside dense populations of springtails, booklice, beetles, moths, and flies. These detritivores—organisms that consume dead organic material—are the primary consumers in this dark world. They are, in turn, prey for a host of predators: pseudoscorpions, spiders like the brown recluse relative Loxosceles similis, and assassin bugs. The species composition can change depending on the type of guano; insect-eating, fruit-eating, and blood-eating bats produce chemically distinct deposits that support different invertebrate communities.
An Eyeless Menagerie
The perpetual darkness of the caves creates extreme selective pressure, resulting in organisms with specialized adaptations known as troglomorphism. These animals, called troglobites, are bound to the subterranean environment and often feature a complete loss of eyes and pigmentation. An example from this region is the Brazilian blind characid, Stygichthys typhlops. First discovered in 1962 from a single specimen brought up during a well-drilling, it was not seen again for over 40 years. This small, solitary fish, reaching about 4.6 cm in length, navigates its world without sight, relying on other heightened senses. It is one of only a few known cave-adapted fish in South America outside of the catfish order. Its survival is severely threatened by the depletion of the local aquifer.
Other aquatic troglobites include the catfish Ancistrus cryptophthalmus, a species of armored catfish that also displays reduced pigmentation and atrophied eyes. The terrestrial fauna is just as specialized. Over 150 obligatory subterranean species have been recorded in Brazil, with many more awaiting formal description. These include translucent spiders, specialized beetles, and millipedes that live their entire lives in the dark, feeding on the resources provided by the guano ecosystem. This isolation within separate cave systems means many species are endemic to a single cave or karst region, making them exceptionally vulnerable to environmental changes.
