A feat of ancient engineering
In 1969, local residents digging air-raid shelters near Wuwei City stumbled upon a tomb from the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD). Inside the tomb of a military official, General Zhang, they found a collection of over 200 bronze figurines, including the sculpture now known as the Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow. The bronze horse measures 34.5 centimeters high, 45 centimeters long, and weighs 7.15 kilograms.
The sculpture is a example of applied physics from nearly two millennia ago. The entire weight of the galloping horse is supported by a single point: the right rear hoof, which rests delicately on the back of a bird. To achieve this, the ancient artists had to calculate the object's center of gravity with extreme precision. The horse’s dynamic pose—with its head turned, tail flying, and legs in motion—is artistic and functional. Each element distributes the mass perfectly around the single, narrow point of support, creating a stable, self-supporting structure. This feat shows a practical understanding of mechanics and material science.
The science of the cast
The horse was created using a complex bronze casting technique. Han-era metallurgists likely employed a version of the lost-wax method or a sophisticated piece-mold process. In lost-wax casting, a detailed wax model is created and then encased in a clay mold. The mold is heated, causing the wax to melt and drain out, leaving a hollow cavity. Molten bronze—an alloy of copper and tin—is then poured into this cavity.
The thinness of the horse's legs and the crispness of the details suggest a high degree of control over the molten metal and the mold-making process. The composition of the bronze alloy itself would have been carefully selected to ensure both strength and fluidity during casting. The result is an object that is both artistically expressive and structurally sound, shows the state of metallurgy during the Han Dynasty.
What is the bird?
While popularly known as a swallow, the identity of the bird beneath the horse's hoof is a subject of scholarly debate. Some art historians point out that the bird’s shape does not perfectly match that of a swallow. Alternative theories suggest it could be a swift or even a mythical creature. One interpretation proposes it is a "dragon-sparrow," a creature from Chinese mythology associated with the wind god. In this view, the horse is running fast; it is outrunning the wind itself. Another theory argues the bird is an eagle, a symbol of the nomadic Xiongnu people, and the sculpture commemorates a Han military victory. This debate adds a layer of scientific inquiry and historical mystery to the object.
