The Roman Port of Lugdunum
The story of Lyon’s Confluence begins with the Roman colony of Lugdunum, founded in 43 BC by Lucius Munatius Plancus. The city quickly became the administrative center of Roman Gaul. Its strategic position at the meeting of the Rhône and Saône rivers made it a natural hub for trade in goods like wheat, wine, and oil. To support this commerce, Roman engineers constructed extensive port facilities, including military and commercial warehouses known as horrea. The district on the peninsula between the rivers was called "canabae," a term used in many Roman cities for areas with concentrations of these warehouses.
Archaeological work, accelerated by the massive "La Confluence" urban renewal project which began in the early 2000s, has uncovered direct evidence of this Roman river engineering. Excavations have revealed the remains of stone quays and docks that once lined the riverbanks, designed to stabilize the land and facilitate the loading and unloading of goods. These structures represent some of the earliest large-scale attempts to manage the powerful and often unpredictable rivers. The Saône, a wide, slow-moving river, and the more impetuous Rhône have a long history of flooding, with major events recorded as far back as AD 280 and 580. The Roman port infrastructure was a foundational effort to impose order on this volatile hydrographic area.
From Medieval Banks to Modern Eco-Districts
After the decline of the Roman Empire, Lyon’s center of gravity shifted away from the peninsula, but the struggle to control the rivers continued. Over centuries, the land was serviced and reinforced with new quays and bridges. The historic floods of 1840 and 1856, the latter of which saw the Tête d'Or dike fail, led to more systematic engineering efforts, narrowing the riverbeds and raising the heights of the dikes to protect developing areas like Les Brotteaux. This ongoing process of land reclamation and flood defense shaped the peninsula into the industrial and transport hub it became in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The modern urban renewal project, launched in 1999 to redevelop 150 hectares of former industrial land, created a new opportunity for urban archaeology. As construction began on futuristic buildings designed by internationally recognized architects, preventive excavations dug through the layers of history. This work exposed the deep timeline of human intervention, from the original Roman port structures buried under medieval and industrial-era landfills to the remnants of later flood defenses. Today, the Confluence is a district with sustainable architecture and green spaces, but just beneath the surface lies a 2,000-year-old record of hydrological engineering and humanity's persistent efforts to live at the meeting point of two great rivers.
