A natural deep freeze
In Yakutsk, the world's largest city built on continuous permafrost, the ground itself is the main exhibit. The P.A. Lazarev Mammoth Museum Laboratory, part of Russia's North-Eastern Federal University, is the only scientific center in the world entirely dedicated to woolly mammoths and the other fauna of the Pleistocene ice age. Approximately 75% of all known mammoth specimens with preserved soft tissues have been discovered in Yakutia, making this museum their primary guardian. The region's permafrost, which can reach depths of up to 1,500 meters, acts as a natural freezer, preserving ancient life for tens of thousands of years.
The museum's main collection is impressive, with over 2,000 bone fragments from animals like woolly rhinoceroses and prehistoric bison. The main attraction, however, lies in an underground freezer where the most valuable specimens are kept. Here, entire carcasses and body parts are stored in conditions that mimic the permafrost, allowing scientists to conduct autopsies on animals that died millennia ago. These remains are so well-preserved that they often contain intact muscle, skin, hair, and even blood.
Autopsies of the Ice Age
One of the most significant specimens is the Malolyakhovsky mammoth, an adult female discovered on Maly Lyakhovsky Island in 2012. When researchers excavated the 28,610-year-old carcass, they found cavities in the ice below its belly filled with dark, liquid blood. The muscle tissue retained the red color of fresh meat. This level of preservation provides a unique opportunity for cellular and genetic analysis, and the specimen is a significant subject in ongoing research collaborations aiming to clone a Mammuthus primigenius.
Another resident of the freezer is Yuka, a juvenile woolly mammoth that died approximately 39,000 years ago. Yuka's body is famous for having the most completely preserved mammoth brain ever found. CT scans revealed a dehydrated but structurally intact brain, including the dura mater membrane that protects it. The brain's volume had shrunk to about 55% of the cranial cavity's volume due to mummification. The specimen also shows deep, unhealed scratches, suggesting an attack by cave lions and possible interaction with early humans.
The collection includes more than mammoths. It includes a 42,000-year-old Lenskaya, or Lena horse, foal found in the Batagaika crater. The foal was so perfectly preserved that liquid blood was extracted from its heart vessels. The museum also holds the remains of several cave lion cubs (Panthera spelaea). The cubs Boris and Sparta, found in 2017 and 2018, were initially thought to be siblings but radiocarbon dating showed they lived 15,000 years apart. Sparta, dated to 28,000 years old, is one of the best-preserved Ice Age animals ever discovered, with intact whiskers and fur.
