A landscape dissolved
The Küre Mountains of northern Turkey are a world shaped by water and time. This range, also known as the Isfendiyar Mountains, runs for 300 kilometers parallel to the Black Sea coast. The foundation of this region is a massive formation of limestone, a rock susceptible to dissolution by slightly acidic rainwater. Over millions of years, this process has sculpted a classic karst landscape, riddled with sinkholes, deep canyons, and an extensive network of caves. The Küre Mountains National Park, established on July 7, 2000, protects 37,753 hectares of this unique geology. Within the park, researchers have so far identified and surveyed at least 125 distinct caves, making it one of the most significant cave regions in the country.
The park's dramatic topography includes deep river valleys and gorges carved from the limestone. Valla Canyon, one of the most prominent, reaches depths of nearly 1,000 meters. This rugged terrain has helped preserve the area's wilderness, allowing its complex underground systems to remain relatively undisturbed. The constant action of water seeping through cracks and fissures in the bedrock continues to expand these subterranean networks, creating new passages and chambers in a slow process of geological creation.
Life adapted to darkness
The caves of the Küre Mountains are isolated subterranean islands, and their inhabitants show evolution in extreme environments. Animals that live their entire lives in the complete absence of light are known as troglobites. These species often exhibit remarkable adaptations: they are frequently blind, lack pigmentation, and have developed heightened non-visual senses to navigate and find food. The Obruklu Cave System, in particular, is a site for studying this process. Its endemic beetles and spiders have been separated from surface-dwelling relatives for more than two million years.
This long-term isolation means their adaptations, such as the loss of eyes and color, occurred by convergent evolution—developing independently from similar species in other cave systems around the world. Life in a cave is a low-energy existence, and many troglobites have extremely slow metabolisms, allowing them to survive for long periods without food.
Other caves in the national park show evidence of different kinds of inhabitants. Ilgarini Cave, which is 858 meters long and reaches a depth of 250 meters, contains archaeological remains from human occupation. Inside, researchers have found chapels, cisterns, and burial structures from the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. Dendrochronological studies of wooden beams used in the three-level graves show that oak and chestnut trees were used by people living in the cave around 977 AD.
