The ghost in the genes
High in the Köroğlu Mountains of northern Turkey, a genetic ghost story is unfolding. The historical leopards of this region, a population known as the Anatolian leopard (Panthera pardus tulliana), were long thought to be extinct. The last officially recorded individual was killed in 1974 near Beypazarı. For decades, the story seemed to end there. However, a 2021 genomic study resurrected the animal, not in flesh, but in data. By analyzing DNA from 18 archival museum specimens, some over a century old, scientists sequenced the leopard's genome for the first time.
The results showed that these historical Anatolian leopards possessed unique mitochondrial haplotypes—sets of genes inherited from the mother—that are not found in any living leopard population today. These distinct genetic markers represent a lost branch of the leopard family tree. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) tracks maternal lineage through generations. The discovery of these extinct haplotypes proves that the original leopards of Anatolia had a unique evolutionary history, separate from their modern relatives.
Recent taxonomic updates have grouped the Anatolian leopard with the Persian leopard (Panthera pardus tulliana), but the genetic information from these old specimens tells a more detailed story. The historical population held a reservoir of genetic diversity that is now permanently gone.
An echo in the mountains
In a surprising turn, leopards have been documented in Turkey again since 2019. Camera traps have captured multiple individuals, primarily males, in different parts of the country, sparking excitement about the return of this predator. Genetic analysis of samples, including urine left near a camera trap, has confirmed their identity. These new arrivals, however, are not the same animals that once roamed the Köroğlu range.
They are Persian leopards, likely dispersing from populations in neighboring countries like Iran. When their DNA is compared to the historical data, they lack the unique mitochondrial haplotypes of the original Anatolian population. This means that leopards are physically returning to their former territory, the specific genetic legacy of the Anatolian leopard has not returned with them.
This phenomenon illustrates a permanent loss of evolutionary potential. The unique adaptations and genetic traits carried by the original leopards, honed over millennia in the specific environment of the Anatolian mountains, have been lost. The mountains, which reach an elevation of 2,499 meters at Köroğlu Tepesi, now host a related but genetically distinct population, a living echo of what once was.
