An Iron Age death
On April 26, 1952, workers cutting peat in the Nebelgård Mose bog near Grauballe, Denmark, uncovered a human body. Assuming a recent death, they contacted authorities. The body was so well-preserved that it retained hair, stubble, and intact skin. Initial scientific analysis, however, placed the man in the Germanic Iron Age. Radiocarbon dating of his liver later confirmed he died sometime between 321 and 261 BC. He was approximately 30-40 years old at the time of death and stood about 1.75 meters (5 feet, 7 inches) tall.
The cause of death was a deep, forceful cut across the throat, severing the trachea and esophagus. The wound's characteristics suggest it was inflicted from behind. While a skull fracture was also present, CT scans determined this damage occurred long after death from the pressure of the bog. His body was deposited naked in the bog, with no clothing or artifacts found with him. The chemistry of the peat bog—acidic, low in oxygen, and cold—prevented decomposition and tanned his tissues, preserving them for over two millennia. This process is due to Sphagnum moss, which releases a polysaccharide called Sphagnan.
A life revealed by science
Decades of scientific study have built a detailed profile of the Grauballe Man. Analysis of his hands showed they were smooth, with no calluses, indicating he did not perform hard manual labor. His teeth and bones showed signs of stress, including periods of starvation or poor health during his childhood and significant calcium deficiency. His spine also showed early signs of spondylosis deformans, a degenerative disk disease.
His preserved digestive tract contained the remains of his last meal, eaten about 12 hours before his death. Analysis identified a porridge or gruel made of grains and the seeds of over 60 different herbs and grasses. The meal also contained small bone fragments and traces of meat. The absence of fresh berries or herbs suggests he died during the winter or early spring. The porridge was contaminated with the ergot fungus (Claviceps purpurea), though likely not in quantities sufficient to cause severe poisoning. CT scans and other modern imaging techniques have provided more information. These scans revealed that his liver was damaged by parasites, specifically the larvae of a tapeworm.
After his discovery, conservators faced the challenge of preserving the body out of the bog. They chose to complete the tanning process that had started naturally. The body was submerged in a solution of oak bark and water for 18 months, ensuring its long-term stability for research and display. He is now exhibited at the Moesgaard Museum near Aarhus.
