Megalithic engineering
The Ġgantija temple complex on the island of Gozo consists of two separate structures built between 3600 and 3200 BCE. The southern temple is the older and better-preserved of the two, with its tallest walls still reaching a height of 6 meters. The builders used two types of local limestone, a choice that helped the monument's longevity. For the massive outer walls, they used hard, durable Coralline Limestone, with some blocks weighing over 50 tons. For the interior elements, such as altars, doorways, and decorative slabs, they chose the softer, easier-to-carve Globigerina Limestone.
Construction of the temples was a remarkable feat of Neolithic engineering, accomplished without the wheel or metal tools. Archaeologists theorize that the massive blocks were moved using small, spherical stones as ball bearings. The structures themselves have a typical clover-leaf floor plan, with a central corridor leading to a series of five semi-circular chambers, or apses. The space between the inner and outer walls was filled with rubble. Traces of plaster and red ochre pigment found on interior walls display these surfaces were once smoothly finished and painted.
A site of ritual
Archaeological evidence indicates Ġgantija was a ceremonial site for fertility rituals. Excavations have unearthed numerous figurines, many depicting obese figures, which are interpreted as symbols of fertility. The discovery of animal bones suggests ritual sacrifice and feasting were part of the activities here. The floors contain libation holes, possibly for pouring liquid offerings.
The temples stand on the Xagħra plateau, facing southeast. This orientation aligns with the equinox sunrise, showing an astronomical awareness among the builders. The large forecourt in front of the temples was intentionally raised, suggesting that congregations would have gathered outside the main structure during ceremonies. The entire complex is UNESCO World Heritage site, along with five other megalithic temples in Malta.
