A Sandbox Stranded in Time
The Chara Sands is a geological anomaly. Located in the north of Zabaykalsky Krai, this dune field measures approximately 10 kilometers long and 5 kilometers wide, covering an area of about 50 square kilometers. It sits in the Chara Basin between the Kodar and Udokan mountain ranges, surrounded by larch taiga, swamps, and rivers. The dunes themselves are active and mobile, forming crescent-shaped barchans that reach heights of 15 to 30 meters, with some peaks rising as high as 80 meters. These mobile sand waves are oriented in a north-westerly direction, shaped by persistent winds flowing through the mountain valleys.
The origin of this sand sea dates back to the Muruktin (or Zyrian) glaciation period, roughly 55,000 to 100,000 years ago. During this ice age, glaciers from the Kodar mountains advanced, damming the Chara River and creating a large proglacial lake in the basin. Over millennia, meltwater and rivers deposited vast quantities of fine-grained quartz and feldspar sediment into this lake. Around 12,000 years ago, as the glaciers retreated, the lake drained. This event exposed the massive volume of sandy sediment left behind. Subsequent wind erosion during the Holocene epoch sculpted these deposits into the active dune field seen today.
An Ecosystem on Ice
The Chara Sands is an environmental contrast. There is no gradual transition zone; the Siberian taiga forest abruptly stops where the sand begins. This creates a unique ecosystem where desert features coexist with arctic conditions. Permafrost lies just beneath the sand, making the dunes perpetually damp a short distance below the surface, even on warm days. The area receives about 35 centimeters of precipitation annually, technically classifying it as semi-arid.
This strange environment supports isolated oases of northern larches and pines that grow directly on the dunes. Two small lakes, Alyonushka and Tayozhnoye, are also found within the sand massif. The surrounding landscape, with snow-capped mountains visible year-round, completes the unusual scene. This desert landscape within a subarctic climate zone makes the Chara Sands the site of ongoing ecological research. Scientists study the trees growing in these conditions for dendrochemical analysis, hoping to reconstruct climate dynamics over the last thousand years.
