A Landscape Dissolved by Water
The Grands Causses landscape is a example of karst topography. This type of terrain forms when slightly acidic water dissolves soluble bedrock like limestone and dolomite. The plateaus here, which sit at elevations between 900 and 1,200 meters, are remnants of a sea floor deposited during the Secondary Era. Tectonic shifts associated with the formation of the Alps lifted this limestone table, and millennia of rainfall have been sculpting it ever since.
Rainwater, absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere to become a weak carbonic acid, seeps into fractures in the limestone. Over immense timescales, this process carves a network of sinkholes (known locally as avens), caves, and underground rivers. On the surface, rivers like the Tarn, Jonte, and Dourbie have cut deep, dramatic gorges that separate the plateaus. Below ground, a hidden drainage system dominates, where water travels through vast networks of conduits before re-emerging from springs at the base of cliffs. This makes the region one of France's largest and well-documented karst areas.
Subterranean Cathedrals
The region's underground system contains some of Europe's most show caves. Aven Armand, located on the Causse Méjean plateau, was discovered by Louis Armand on September 19, 1897. Its main chamber is large enough to contain the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, measuring 110 meters long, 60 meters wide, and 45 meters high. This single room contains a "forest" of over 400 stalagmites, including the tallest known stalagmite in the world at 30 meters. Visitors descend 75 meters into the Earth via a funicular to access the chamber.
Nearby, the Grotte de Dargilan is called "the Pink Cave" for its unusual coloration, caused by iron oxides in the seepage water. First explored by Édouard-Alfred Martel in 1888, it has vast chambers and a 2,000-square-meter flowstone "waterfall" formation. Another of Martel's pioneering explorations took place at the Abîme de Bramabiau. Here, a surface river named the "Bonheur" (Happiness) disappears into the limestone plateau and resurfaces 800 meters later as the Bramabiau, a name meaning "roaring ox" in the local dialect. Martel's 1888 exploration of this underground river is considered a founding moment for modern speleology.
