A Landscape Shaped by Water
The Gorges du Tarn is a 53-kilometer-long canyon that cuts through the Grands Causses limestone plateaus of southern France. The canyon walls, which reach depths of 500 meters, expose layers of Jurassic-period limestone. These sedimentary rocks formed at the bottom of a sea more than 150 million years ago. Tectonic movements during the Tertiary period lifted these plateaus, causing the limestone to fracture.
The Tarn River then began its slow work of erosion, carving the canyon through two simultaneous processes. The first is fluvial erosion, the physical force of the river cutting down through the rock. The second is karstic erosion. Limestone is a soluble rock, and slightly acidic rainwater penetrates its cracks and fissures, dissolving the rock and creating a complex underground drainage system. This karstic network is responsible for the gorge's most unusual hydrological feature: the river's seasonal disappearance.
The River's Double Life
The Tarn's flow is highly variable, influenced by Mediterranean and oceanic weather patterns. In the spring, snowmelt from its source on Mont Lozère can swell the river. During the dry summer months, however, the surface flow diminishes significantly. The river disappears into sinkholes, known as "pertes," diverting its entire flow into the subterranean cave network it has carved over millennia. The water travels through these underground conduits before re-emerging at springs, or "resurgences," further downstream, leaving sections of the surface riverbed dry and walkable.
This subterranean system makes the region a classic example of a karst landscape, environments that are notoriously difficult to model hydrologically. Water can travel rapidly through these underground networks, making them important freshwater reservoirs but also highly vulnerable to contamination. Intense rainfall events, known as "épisodes cévenols," can cause the underground system to fill rapidly, leading to severe flash floods.
Subterranean Worlds
The same forces that shaped the gorge created a vast number of caves, known locally as "grottes" and vertical shafts called "avens". Two of the most spectacular are Aven Armand and the Grotte de Dargilan.
Aven Armand consists of a single, immense chamber, 110 meters long and 60 meters wide, large enough to contain the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral. It contains a "forest" of over 400 stalagmites, including the tallest known stalagmite in the world, which measures 30 meters high. The cave was first scientifically explored in 1897 by Louis Armand and Édouard-Alfred Martel, a pioneer of modern speleology.
Nearby, the Grotte de Dargilan is called the "Pink Cave" for the natural ocher and orange colors of its calcite formations. It features vast chambers and a unique petrified cascade formation that is 107 meters long and 20 meters high.

Accessibility
The main road through the gorge (D907bis) is paved. Viewpoints are generally accessible. Hiking trails and access to the riverbed involve steep, uneven terrain. Some caves have funiculars or elevators but still require walking on potentially slippery surfaces.
