A Bay of Living Light
Mosquito Bay, on the southern shore of the island of Vieques, holds the Guinness World Record for the brightest bioluminescent bay on Earth. The water contains an extraordinary concentration of single-celled organisms called Pyrodinium bahamense, or "whirling fire." Densities can reach up to 700,000 of these dinoflagellates per gallon of water. When agitated by the stroke of a paddle or a swimming fish, each organism emits a flash of blue-green light that lasts for about one-tenth of a second.
This glow is a chemical defense mechanism. Inside specialized organelles called scintillons, a light-emitting substrate called luciferin is oxidized by the enzyme luciferase. This reaction, which is sensitive to pH changes triggered by mechanical disturbance, creates a "cold light" with very little heat. The rapid flash, occurring in less than 20 milliseconds, is designed to startle predators. It can also function as a "burglar alarm," attracting the attention of larger predators that may then prey on the dinoflagellate's attacker.
A Perfectly Balanced Ecosystem
The bay’s intense and consistent glow is the result of a unique combination of geographic and biological factors. A narrow and shallow channel restricts water exchange with the Caribbean Sea, trapping the dinoflagellate population inside. The bay is surrounded by red mangrove forests (Rhizophora mangle), which are essential to the ecosystem's health. As the mangrove roots and leaves decompose, they release tannins and other nutrients into the water, including vitamin B12, which is needed for the growth of Pyrodinium bahamense.
The ecosystem makes the bay highly vulnerable to disruption. After Hurricane Maria in 2017, the bay temporarily went dark after the storm surge and destruction of mangroves drastically altered the water chemistry. Scientists and conservation groups, including the Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust, have worked to restore the mangrove forests, and the bay has since recovered to become even brighter than before the storm. Strict regulations are in place to protect this environment; swimming has been prohibited since 2007 to prevent contamination from sunscreens and insect repellents, which are harmful to the dinoflagellates.
