The Great Skrei Migration
The Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua) is the world's largest cod stock, and it undertakes one of the planet's most impressive marine migrations. Each winter, sexually mature cod, aged between six and nine years, begin a migration of over 1,000 kilometers from the icy Barents Sea back to their birthplace. Their destination is the specific coastal spawning grounds off northern Norway, with the Lofoten Islands being the most significant. This spawning cod is so revered in Norway it has its own name: "skrei," derived from an old Norse word meaning "to travel" or "wanderer."
Spawning peaks between February and April. A single large female can release between three and nine million eggs into the water column, where they are fertilized and drift freely with the currents. This is just the beginning of their journey. Over the next six months, the ocean currents—specifically the Norwegian Atlantic Current and the Norwegian Coastal Current—carry the eggs, larvae, and eventually juvenile fish north and east. This massive drift transports them hundreds of kilometers back to the nutrient-rich feeding grounds of the Barents Sea, a vast continental shelf shared by Norway and Russia. For the first few years of their lives, the young cod feed on zooplankton, krill, and small crustaceans. As they grow, their diet shifts to larger prey, primarily capelin and herring, and they even engage in cannibalism. They remain in these waters for years, growing to maturity before undertaking the great migration themselves, completing the cycle.
A Fishery in Hot Water
The Barents Sea cod is an ecological marvel and a massive commercial resource. To prevent overexploitation, Norway and Russia established the Joint Norwegian-Russian Fisheries Commission in 1976. This bilateral body uses scientific advice to set an annual Total Allowable Catch (TAC), which the two nations share, with smaller portions allocated to other countries. This cooperative management has allowed the stock to remain relatively healthy, a success story in international fisheries.
A new variable is rapidly changing the dynamics of the Barents Sea: climate change. The region is warming faster than other parts of the Arctic. Ocean temperatures in the Barents Sea have increased significantly, with some measurements showing a rise of 0.2°C per decade. This "Atlantification" is causing deep shifts. The sea ice that defines the Arctic ecosystem is retreating, and warmer boreal waters are expanding northward.
For the cod, this means their entire habitat is moving. The fish are following their preferred temperatures and prey, expanding their range farther north and east into areas they have never occupied. Cod have recently been found as far north as 82° 30' N, near Franz Josef Land. While this opens up new fishing grounds, it also creates uncertainty. Scientists have observed that cod spawning grounds are also shifting northward, away from the traditional Lofoten area. This poleward shift may lead to smaller juvenile cod, as the new spawning locations might not be optimal for their early development.
