A cold spot in a warm ocean
The coastline of Arraial do Cabo marks a sudden change in direction, a geographical quirk that forces deep, cold water to the surface. This is Brazil's most intense coastal upwelling system. The process is driven primarily by persistent northeasterly winds, especially during the Southern Hemisphere's spring and summer. These winds push the warm surface water of the Brazil Current offshore. To replace it, cold, dense water from depths of around 300 meters is pulled up onto the continental shelf.
This deep water is the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW), a distinct water mass with temperatures that can range from 13°C to 18°C. When it reaches the surface at Arraial do Cabo, it can cause the sea temperature to drop by more than 10°C in just a few hours, differing from the surrounding tropical waters that average 23°C to 25°C. The unique bathymetry of the region, where the continental shelf is particularly narrow, amplifies this effect, making the upwelling highly efficient. This constant infusion of cold water gives the local marine environment temperate characteristics, completely unlike the subtropical waters found just to the east.
An engine for life
The South Atlantic Central Water is cold and is loaded with inorganic nutrients like nitrate and phosphate. Once at the sunlit surface, these nutrients fuel massive phytoplankton blooms, forming the base of a complex food web. This high productivity supports a large population of zooplankton, which in turn feeds small pelagic fish. The area is a critical habitat for the Brazilian sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis), a species of major commercial importance. The upwelling sustains a fishery that accounts for a significant portion of Brazil's total marine catch.
This pocket of cold, nutrient-rich water also creates an unusual ecological trap. Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus), which breed thousands of kilometers to the south in Patagonia, follow cold currents north in search of food after the breeding season. Younger, less experienced penguins are sometimes swept too far north by the warm, south-flowing Brazil Current. Exhausted and often suffering from hypothermia, many wash ashore along the Brazilian coast. The cold waters of Arraial do Cabo offer a temporary refuge with abundant food, allowing some to recover before attempting the long journey south again. The presence of these penguins is a biological indicator of the powerful oceanographic forces at play. The region's biodiversity is so significant that it is protected as the Arraial do Cabo Marine Extractive Reserve.
