An uninterrupted seismic history
In a seismically active zone of Central Asia, the Tashkent seismic station holds a globally significant dataset. Since its establishment in 1901, the station has maintained a continuous, unbroken record of seismic activity. This archive, spanning over a century, provides a long baseline for studying earthquake patterns, recurrence intervals, and crustal stresses. Such long-term, homogenous datasets are rare and allow for a much deeper analysis of seismic hazards than is possible with shorter records.
The Institute of Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, established on October 1, 1966, now manages the network. Its initial formation was a direct response to a devastating local earthquake that year. The institute oversees a network of 22 seismic stations and numerous other observation points across the country. While modern digital sensors have been added, some of the original Soviet-era instruments, known for their robust mechanical design, continue to operate, preserving the consistency of the long-term record. Data from these older instruments, often recorded on photographic paper, form a vast physical archive of the Earth's movements.
The 1966 Tashkent earthquake
On April 26, 1966, at 5:23 AM, the city of Tashkent was struck by a powerful earthquake. While its moment magnitude was a moderate 5.2, the focus was exceptionally shallow, located just 3 to 8 kilometers directly beneath the city center. This shallow depth amplified the surface shaking to an intensity of VIII-IX on the MSK-64 scale, causing catastrophic damage.
The earthquake destroyed over 80% of the city. More than 28,000 buildings collapsed or were rendered uninhabitable, including 236 administrative buildings, 181 schools, and 185 medical facilities. Traditional adobe and unreinforced brick masonry structures, common in the city's older districts, almost completely failed. The disaster left approximately 300,000 of the city's 1.5 million residents homeless. In the aftermath of the main shock, the Tashkent seismic station recorded over 1,100 aftershocks by the end of 1969. The event prompted a massive, Soviet-led reconstruction effort that completely reshaped the city with wide boulevards and buildings designed to new seismic standards, a style sometimes called "seismic modernism". The city's ornate metro system, the first in Central Asia, was also engineered to serve as a nuclear shelter and withstand powerful seismic events.
