An avian city within a city
In the suburbs of Colombo, sandwiched between houses and roads, lies the Talangama Wetland, an Environmental Protection Area established in 2007. This 118-hectare refuge consists of two man-made reservoirs, the Talangama and Averihena tanks, along with marshes and paddy fields. This location is an important site for urban biodiversity, containing an unexpectedly dense nesting colony of Purple Herons (Ardea purpurea). The specific subspecies found here is Ardea purpurea manilensis, which is resident in southern and eastern Asia.
The herons construct their bulky nests from dead reeds and sticks, placing them in the dense reed beds, particularly Phragmites species, that line the water's edge. This colonial nesting behavior, sometimes in proximity to other heron and egret species, is typical for the species. A female usually lays a clutch of four to five bluish-green eggs, which are incubated by both parents for 24 to 28 days. The chicks fledge about six weeks after hatching. The colony at Talangama is a breeding site, allowing researchers a unique opportunity to observe how these birds navigate the pressures of an urban environment.
A laboratory for urban adaptation
The Talangama colony is a living experiment in synanthropization, the process by which wild animals adapt to human-created environments. Researchers from local universities use the wetland to conduct studies on water quality, biodiversity, and the impacts of pollution. The Purple Heron's presence in such a densely populated area raises scientific questions about its foraging strategies and resilience. Their diet typically consists of fish, frogs, insects, and even small rodents, which they hunt by patiently stalking or ambushing in shallow water. Their ability to find sufficient prey amidst urban runoff and altered hydrology is an area of study.
The wetland faces constant threats from the surrounding city. Colombo has lost an estimated 40% of its wetlands over the last 30 years. The Talangama area is pressured by illegal landfilling for housing, indiscriminate garbage disposal, and the introduction of invasive species like the South American apple snail and non-native fish. These pressures directly affect the herons by degrading their foraging habitats and introducing pollutants. Despite these challenges, the colony persists, providing scientists data on how colonial waterbirds can, and sometimes cannot, cope with intensifying urbanization. The area's formal protection status allows for ongoing research and community-led conservation efforts.
